The temperature is over 60 degrees today in Connecticut , just a week before Thanksgiving. A person could be forgiven for thinking Indian summer will last for ever. Sadly, it won't. Before long, ice, snow, and frigid cold will be upon us, and now is the time to start thinking about cold weather gear, especially if you work outdoors.

Good quality winter work gloves are expressly designed to protect your hands in frigid weather. When the mercury plunges in January or February, the air temperature in many parts of the United States can reach dangerous levels. It's essential, if you work or play outside for any length of time, to protect your hands with winter work gloves.

Finding the right glove for the conditions you encounter is an important aspect of preparing for the winter temperatures. Many different fabrics and materials are found in today's winter work gloves, ranging from cotton fleece, to insulated leather. Here are some of the most common work gloves that should cover the needs of most people.

Insulated work gloves with leather palms

Tough and durable, leather palm work gloves, with an insulated lining, are the workhorse for many industries. Constructed from heavy leather, this glove is ideal for outside winter work. It is available with a knitted wrist for additional protection from snow and ice.

Cotton gloves with fleece lining

When the weather is cold, but not frigid, fleece-lined cotton can be the glove of choice for many tasks. A good quality glove will have a cotton shell encasing two layers of quilted fleece, thereby allowing maximum flexibility for your hands.

Insulated nitrile gloves

One of the toughest outdoor jobs has to be working with chemicals or oil type products in a cold environment. In these situations, consider using insulated nitrile gloves. The glove, which has a thermal cotton lining, is twice-dipped in nitrile butyl rubber, creating a tough barrier against both cold weather and hazardous materials. The rough finish gives an excellent grip in icy conditions.

Knit-lined neoprene gloves

The elastic knit cotton lining insulates your hands from the cold, while absorbing perspiration. Long-lasting gloves with chemical and abrasion resistant qualities.

Insulated freezer gloves

The name says it all when it comes to freezer gloves. These tough cold temperature work gloves are constructed of heavy leather around a thermal lining. The glove affords flexibility and protection and is excellent for most icy conditions you may encounter. The knit wrist helps to keep bits of snow and ice on the outside, where it belongs.

Insulated PVC gloves

The rough finish and bright color of insulated PVC gloves makes them a great choice for working outdoors in harsh weather. The thermal lining keeps hands warm, and the bright color enhances safety in many situations.

Leather driving gloves with fleece

Leather driving gloves with fleece lining are perfect for many chores, including utility work, warehouse tasks, and of course, driving. The leather is longer-lasting than cotton, making it a better choice for the long winters. Premium leather, such as deerskin, adds several important qualities, including warmth, flexibility, and waterproofing. Deerskin actually stays supple even when wet, making it a great winter work glove.

Rubber-coated insulated gloves

Cold, frigid weather makes every task harder, and handling items such as glass, or waste material, can become more dangerous as the temperature falls. Rubber-coated, insulated gloves, with enhanced-gripping properties provide strong protection in harsh conditions.

Working safely means working intelligently, and making sure you are wearing the right equipment is always important. In frigid weather, it becomes even more important to dress properly. Your hands are one of the most exposed parts of your body in winter subject to frostbite in the worst case scenario. By taking a few minutes to select the right winter work gloves you are helping to keep yourself warm and safe.
